Helping farmers in the Cultivation of their Upper Terrain

Three and a half lacks of rupees were donated to TECH from ILO, whereby the money was to be used to train existing farmers in producing maximum yield. One factor that contributes to the growth of healthy vegetation is how fertile the land is.

Cultivation takes place mainly in two types of terrain. Ruthiraparam is considered to have land that is classed upper terrain. As recognised by TECH and ILO, its fertile soil should be utilised, and hence essential training for the farmers is required in order to achieve this goal. Learning and understanding how to achieve the optimum conditions is vital, so as to produce an increased percentage of yields.

Majority of the population in Ruthiraparam are farmers. Twenty-five farmers were selected by TECH, where seeds and tools were donated. A further fifteen farmers were selected and they were given various types of vegetable seeds, i.e. brinjol, tomatoes, chillies, and other variety of vegetable seeds, as well as agricultural tools.

Professionals in the agriculture industry shared their expertise knowledge to the selected farmers. Their advice and training are important in order to utilise and maximise the growth of their crops. The ceremony took place on 19 th November 2005 . Participants involved in this event, were from ILO co-ordinator Mr. Janarthanan, Mr. Sugunan, Mr. Ganesalingham and Mr. Kanthasamy.
