Computer Lab at Vadarmachi

After the tsunami that struck in December 2004, Vadamadchi is now considered to be one of the most affected areas of North-East Sri-Lanka. Majority of the people in Vadamarchi are fisherman, and depend only on fishing as their source of income. Fishing however, is not always profitable, as there are times where fishermen are idle, and hence face economic struggles. Due to this economic struggle, parents relying on the fishing industry to pay for day to day expenses cannot afford to send their children to school. This eventually leads to young children dropping out, and missing out on vital education.

TECH recognised this, and organised for free computer training to the children of Vadarmadchi. The classes involved training in the basic use of computers, and provided invaluable experience. It also allowed the students to reap the enjoyment of having access to computers, which is considered a luxury too many eyes. Computer training is essential to survive in the modern world, it has become a necessity.

The training centre was constructed in Maruthankkeny with the financial help of WUSC (World University Service of Canada), and was opened on 29 th March 2006. The computers used in this training centre were kindly donated by TECH Norway .
