Computer centre at Killinochchi

There is an increased interest from youngsters both male and female who wish to pursue their studies in technical subjects. Due to the poverty conditions that surround them, and the lack of funding to pay for tuitions fees and transport, this is not a possibility for the majority. The nearest computer classes for most involve travelling large distance, which again is associated with a daily fee.

With the help of Norway TECH, a training school was built in Killinochchi. There are now many Tamil Diasporas working in Norway , in professional fields. With their help, large selections of Pentium III computers were acquired from the Norwegian county, University of Oslo , and Norsk Hydro media. An executive member of TECH Norway received sixty well-conditioned PCs from a small county Oppegaard , which were all sent safely to the North-East island of Sri-Lanka .

Twenty students were selected to attend an introductory PC course, where they learnt the hardware basics of computers, and trained on how to use MS Office applications. The course duration is six months, whereby on completion of classes, an exam is held. The successful candidates will proceed further to the advanced level courses.

This institution was established on 30 th January 2006. Participants of this occasion included Chief of Youth Welfare, Mr. Suntharalingham, and the Computer Teacher, Mr Seethavengai. The youth organisation thanked the Norwegian county Oppegaard , University of Oslo and Norsk Hydro media, as well as the Norwegian expatriates for their generosity and kindness. Over a 100 PCs have been received by TECH in Sri-Lanka, where they will be distributed across the various parts of North-East. Young hopefuls will be trained, where their PC skills will be developed. These poverty-stricken youngsters have much to gain from this generosity, for some, it will be the stepping stone needed to start re-building their lives.
