Pre-School in Mulaitheevu funded by TECH Japan
On 15 th January 2006 , the foundations of the pre-school in Mulaitheevu were put in place. This project was dedicated and organised in memory of Japanese Mr. Wyman, whose life was taken away by the Tsunami. The project was funded by TECH in Japan , who donated a $50000 for the school’s successful running.
Many children between the ages of two to six are forced to take on the responsibility of looking after themselves and their siblings, whilst their parent(s) go to work during the day. Families are suffering from poverty conditions, whereby the majority of these sufferers are in the North-East in the island of Sri-Lanka . Poverty has forced parents to work for the survival of their family. The amount of money they work for is not enough, which as a result leads to parents abandoning their children, to fend for themselves, whilst they are away.
TECH has recognised this above problem, and as a result TECH has begun to open pre-schools in various places of the North-East. Many of the children who are from the North-East part of Sri-Lanka, have lost parents either through the civil war or through tsunami. Many lone parents are leading difficult lives, in supporting and looking after their children. At the same time, some lone parents choose to abandon their children, because they cannot deal with the stress and pressure of looking after a child alone.
The pre-schools take on children in the age range of two to six. There are programmes and classes designed, whereby they meet the children’s nutritional needs, and promoting their physical activities. The schools also help in developing the child’s literacy. The teaching and learning of these literacy skills, are the key determinants of the educational success of these refugees.
Children who enter this school and other pre-schools, will develop their literacy skills, and increase their vocabulary. The opening of this pre-school in Mulaitheevu, had Prof. Navaratnaraja, Dr. Manoharan, Mr. Muralitharan, Mr. SasiKumar, and Miss Sutharshani, who were all involved in the ceremony.
