ILO fund bakery training centre in Mannar

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) made the essential step forward, in re-building our nation, by funding the Bakery Training Centre located in Illupaikadavai in Mannar district. The ILO recognised that the people living in the Mannar area, suffered from extreme poverty, as a result of the war. The future of these people looked bleak, with no stability home or income. The war forces the people out of their homes, and to continually start afresh.

The Bakery Training Centre selected ten teenage individuals, to give them the opportunity to gain skills needed to succeed in the baking industry. These ten participants were amongst the many others that are still suffering the scars of the war. This specialised skilled training programme will allow these ten students to give hope and prospect for their future.

In addition, a further ten women were selected, who came from a household background, where their duties didn’t go beyond maintaining the home, and looking after family. This training was an opportunity to make something of their lives.

The Economic Consultancy House (TECH), and NGO working mainly in the North-East are dealing with the administration of this training centre.

The opening event was chaired by the TECH’s Field Officer S.Jasikaran. Other prestigious members present in this event included Mr. P.William (representing Canada TECH), Mr. Jeyakumar from TECH’s Planning division, Ms. Subashini (President of Illupaikadavai Women’s Development Organisation) and Ms. Rubi (Chairman of Illupaikadvai Sea Workers Union) who lit the ceremonial lamp.

Mr. K.Thangavelu has been appointed as the training teacher for the centre.

TECH’s Executive Director objectives for his organisation, is to develop the technology driven large scale projects that bring economic benefit to North-East region, but at the same time to also focus on smaller scale projects, such as raising the income levels of rural folks by providing new employment opportunities.
